Position Description: Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a literary arts education program that places professional local writers in 27 public schools across four school districts, as well as Seattle Children’s Hospital. The mission of WITS is to inspire student and teacher excellence in literacy and the literary arts, and to establish the foundation for a life-long commitment to reading, writing, and creative expression.

Reports to: WITS Program Director & WITS Program Associate

Writers in the Schools (WITS) has three primary goals:
• Inspire students to engage in the writing process, build skills and improve the quality of their writing, and increase their self-confidence
• Invigorate the teaching of writing by providing teachers with innovative lessons and literature, fresh techniques, and the time and encouragement to join their students in writing
• Support and sustain a positive culture of reading and writing both in school settings, and in our summer camp programming.

WITS is seeking two interns for summer support during June to August—dates flexible depending on intern availability and/or school schedule). Interns work on a wide variety of tasks and projects, for example:
• Assisting with preparation for school-year anthology of student work and fall reading
• Helping with summer camp preparation and on-site support
• Contributing to organizational blog posts
• Reading and/or typing student work and data entry

• A commitment from June -Aug. 2017, 8-12 hours per week, on a regular schedule. Intern credit is available for with collaboration with university faculty. Start and end dates negotiable.
• Collaborate with staff and other volunteers.
• Communicate with staff openly. Your ideas, comments and feedback are welcome.

Qualifications & Experience:
• A demonstrated interest in literary arts and education; previous volunteer experience a plus
• Must possess a positive attitude and be flexible, friendly & courteous with guests and among peers.
• Must be a team player but able to work independently on projects.
• Good communication skills.

This is a volunteer position-- credit hours available for students as well as fee admission to Seattle Arts & Lectures events.
